Ivan Krastev is a permanent fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna and chairman of the Center for Liberal Strategies in Sofia. Krastev is a founding board member of the European Council on Foreign Relations in Berlin, as well as a board member of the Open Society Foundation and of the International Crisis Group.
Previously, he served as Executive Director of the International Commission on the Balkans. In 2020, Krastev was awarded the Jean-Marie Prize for European Essay Writing. He has been a contributing opinion writer for the New York Times, and publishes regularly in the Financial Times. Trained as a political scientist, Ivan Krastev is the author of widely acclaimed books such as “Democracy Disrupted: The Global Politics on Protest”, “In Mistrust We Trust: Can Democracy Survive When We Don’t Trust Our Leaders”, “After Europe”, and most recently, the award winning “The Light That Failed”, co-authored with Stephen Holmes.
